How to Fertilize Bermuda Grass in NC

Bermuda grass is one of the most popular grasses in the south. Its ability to withstand heat, drought and more can give it the competitive edge over other lawn types. That said, the right (or wrong) approach to fertilizing can make all the difference.

As we get closer to summer, the prime time for Bermuda grass to grow, it helps to have your lawn plan in order. Here’s what you need to know, whether you’re planting a fresh bermuda lawn or already have one.

When To Plant Bermuda Grass

As a warm-weather grass, the best time to put down bermuda seeds is late spring. The seeding process involves loosening the soil, building up the turf, applying the seeds and firming the soil back up. Then, the soil and seeds should continually get enough water to keep them both moist. This can typically mean anywhere from 3-4 waterings a day, at about an ⅛ inch of water.

How To Fertilize Bermuda Grass

For both new and existing bermuda lawns, the fertilizer process is the same:

When growing bermuda grass from seed, the first fertilizer application should be 4 weeks after the seeding takes place. Then, you can stick to a more standard pattern of applications.

When To Fertilize Bermuda Grass

In general, fertilizer treatment should take place from March through August, when bermuda grass grows the most. This will help ensure a healthy lawn that stays green through the summer. In most cases, fertilization is only needed 3-4 times in total. Applying too much fertilizer can do more harm than good or even kill the grass.

What Fertilizer To Use

When it comes to picking the best fertilizer for bermuda grass seed, it isn’t as simple as you may expect. The truth is that there’s no universal fertilizer that will work for every bermuda lawn.

To be effective, a fertilizer needs to provide the unique amounts of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium a lawn needs. These are essential for bermuda grass to build up its defenses and grow more effectively.

This is why Barefoot Lawn Care puts effort into understanding each lawn’s exact fertilizer needs.
